Ethiopia

Rock-hewn churches, high mountains and the home of coffee.

Why Ethiopia

Ethiopia has its own alphabet, its own calendar and churches carved down into solid rock more than eight centuries ago.

It is history and landscape more than safari. Addis Ababa is a working capital, and the highlands beyond it rise above 4,000 metres.

What to see

Lalibela

Eleven churches cut from the rock, still used for worship today.

Simien Mountains

Sheer escarpments, gelada monkeys and some of Africa's highest trekking.

Gondar and Lake Tana

Royal castles on one side, island monasteries on the lake on the other.

Harar

A walled Muslim city in the east with more than 80 mosques, listed by UNESCO.

When to go

October to March is dry and clear

The rains run roughly June to September. The highlands are at their greenest just after.
